They are\u00a0succulent\u00a0perennials\u00a0forming mats composed of tufted leaves in rosettes. In favourable conditions they spread rapidly via\u00a0offsets, and several species are valued in cultivation as\u00a0groundcover\u00a0for dry, sunny spots.<\/p>\n<p><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div   class=\"togglecontainer    avia-builder-el-5  el_after_av_textblock  avia-builder-el-last \" >\n<section class=\"av_toggle_section\"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\"  >    <div role=\"tablist\" class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{All} \"  >        <p data-fake-id=\"#toggle-id-1\" class=\"toggler \"  itemprop=\"headline\"    role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"toggle-id-1\">In cosmetics<span class=\"toggle_icon\" >        <span class=\"vert_icon\"><\/span><span class=\"hor_icon\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>        <div id=\"toggle-id-1\" class=\"toggle_wrap \"   >            <div class=\"toggle_content invers-color \"  itemprop=\"text\"   ><p>Facial steam to heal and nourish skin.<\/p>\n<p>The juice is commonly applied directly to the skin for many of the same uses as aloe vera such as burns, warts and insect bites, nettle stings, cuts, ulcers, itching and burning skin.<\/p>\n<p>It is said to remove warts and corns. Parkinson tells us:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8216;The juice takes away corns from the toes and feet if they be bathed therewith every day, and at night emplastered as it were with the skin of the same House Leek.&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The leaves sliced in two and the inner surface applied to warts, act as a positive cure for them.<\/p>\n            <\/div>        <\/div>    <\/div><\/section>\n<section class=\"av_toggle_section\"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\"  >    <div role=\"tablist\" class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{All} \"  >        <p data-fake-id=\"#toggle-id-2\" class=\"toggler \"  itemprop=\"headline\"    role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"toggle-id-2\">As a medicine<span class=\"toggle_icon\" >        <span class=\"vert_icon\"><\/span><span class=\"hor_icon\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>        <div id=\"toggle-id-2\" class=\"toggle_wrap \"   >            <div class=\"toggle_content invers-color \"  itemprop=\"text\"   ><p>It has been used historically and is used presently as a medicinal herb. It has no known side effects (aside from being an emetic in large doses, which that property is actually useful in treating certain diseases) or drug interactions. Common herbal uses are stopping bad cases of diarrhea by drinking the juice of the leaf or eating the leaves directly.<\/p>\n<p>The famous English herbalist Culpepper says &#8216;Our ordinary Houseleek is good for all inward heats, as well as outward, and in the eyes or other parts of the body: a posset made of the juice is singularly good in all hot agues, for it cooleth and tempereth the blood and spirits and quencheth the thirst; and is also good to stay all defluction or sharp and salt rheums in the eyes, the juice being dropped into them. If the juice be dropped into the ears, it easeth pain&#8230;. It cooleth and restraineth all hot inflammations St. Anthony&#8217;s fire (Erysipelas), scaldings and burnings, the shingles, fretting ulcers, ringworms and the like; and much easeth the pain and the gout.&#8217;<\/p>\n            <\/div>        <\/div>    <\/div><\/section>\n<section class=\"av_toggle_section\"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\"  >    <div role=\"tablist\" class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{All} \"  >        <p data-fake-id=\"#toggle-id-3\" class=\"toggler \"  itemprop=\"headline\"    role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"toggle-id-3\">Origin of name<span class=\"toggle_icon\" >        <span class=\"vert_icon\"><\/span><span class=\"hor_icon\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>        <div id=\"toggle-id-3\" class=\"toggle_wrap \"   >            <div class=\"toggle_content invers-color \"  itemprop=\"text\"   ><p>The name\u00a0<em>Sempervivum<\/em>\u00a0has its origin in the Latin\u00a0<em>semper<\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;always&#8221;) and\u00a0<em>vivus<\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;living&#8221;), because this perennial plant keeps its leaves in winter and is very resistant to difficult conditions of growth.\u00a0The common name\u00a0<strong>houseleek<\/strong>\u00a0is believed to stem from the traditional practice of growing plants on the roofs of houses to ward off fire and lightning strikes. Other common names reflect the plant&#8217;s ancient association with\u00a0Thor, the Norse god of thunder, and the Roman\u00a0Jupiter.
